How to File
a Claim
The Texas Windstorm
Insurance Association (TWIA) has one Claims Department located in Austin,
Texas. The department is managed by the Director of Claims who has a full-time
Claims Coordinator/Supervisor and a part-time Claims Supervisor. Other temporary
staff is available if needed. All claims are reported to Austin by the
agent and assigned to independent adjusters for investigation. The adjusters
report their findings to Austin and we make a final decision on the claim.
Claim payments are mailed directly to the insured in most cases, with a claim
disposition letter to the agent.
For Policyholders
- If you have
a windstorm or hail loss, please contact your agent promptly.
- The agent
will confirm the details of your loss and report your claim to TWIA.
- We will confirm
your coverage under your TWIA policy and assign your claim to a local adjuster
for investigation.
- We will mail
you a copy of the Claim Notice Acknowledgment and Assignment which will
identify the adjusting firm handling your claim.
- Along with
the Claim Notice Acknowledgment, you may also receive other information
pertaining to your claim.
- The adjuster
will contact you for an appointment to inspect your property.
- You should
make reasonable temporary
repairs to protect your property from further damage.
- If possible,
take photos of the damage prior to making temporary repairs.
- Please keep
detailed documentation of your temporary repairs and give this information
to your adjuster.
For Agents
- Complete the
Claim Reporting Form/Loss Notice
that accompanies the TWIA policy or complete the ACORD
1 (10/98 edition) Loss Notice.
- An incomplete
loss notice can delay the adjustment of the claim.
- It is
very important that the loss notice indicate what type of damage is
involved (wind, flood, hail).
- Please
include any pertinent information that may have been supplied to you
by the insured when you fax the Loss Notice to TWIA. (i.e. receipts,
cancelled checks, estimates, etc.)
- Please
provide the name and policy number of the FLOOD carrier and the HOMEOWNER
carrier.
- Upon completion
of the Loss Notice, fax it to TWIA at 512-899-4953. (We do not need "cover
sheets" with the loss notices.)
- These forms
can also be mailed to TWIA by regular or express mail.
- If the insured
provides you photos or other information, please mail to the Claims Department
at TWIA in Austin.
- A local adjuster
will be assigned as soon as possible to investigate the claim.
- Please instruct
the insured to make reasonable temporary repairs to protect their property
from further damage.
- Ask the insured
to keep all documentation concerning their loss and temporary
repairs and to give this information to the adjuster.
Note:
In the event of a serious storm, we may establish other methods of reporting
and collecting loss notices and information. This will be communicated to
the agents at the time of the storm.
