This page contains information for Texas coastal insurance policyholders and their agents dealing with companies ending operations and cancelling policies. Currently, those affected are former Weston and FedNat (Maison) policyholders and their agents.
Weston policyholders with pending claims or other questions can contact Weston Claims/Customer Service by visiting their website or calling (877) 505-3040. TWIA does not have information about Weston policies or claims.
If you are seeking information about Weston policy premium refunds, contact the Texas Property and Casualty Insurance Guaranty Association (TPCIGA).
TDI Emergency Rule for Weston Policyholders
The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) issued an emergency rule authorizing TWIA to provide Weston policyholders more time and flexibility when applying for TWIA coverage.
The emergency rule provides policyholders:
- More time to apply: Former Weston policyholders will have until November 6, 2022, to apply for a TWIA policy that gives them coverage starting September 7 (the date Weston policies were cancelled).
- Coverage even if a storm is on its way: Former Weston policyholders can get a TWIA policy, even if a storm is in the Gulf and a policy moratorium is in effect.
- No payment to start coverage: Policyholders will not need to make a payment for the first three months of coverage. After that, the premium will be due in equal monthly amounts. Policyholders also have the option to choose regular TWIA payment plans.
Application guidelines for agents:
Important: Call TWIA before submitting an application if you are requesting an effective date of September 7. TWIA underwriters must manually change the policy effective date at the time of application submission.
- In the declination section, type in "Weston” when prompted to provide the declining carrier.
- Policy cancellation due to receivership and/or liquidation meets the coverage declination required for TWIA eligibility. No additional declination is required.
- If a policyholder doesn’t have proof of a WPI-8, the agent should upload a copy of the declaration page from the policyholder’s cancelled Weston policy in the "WPI-8" upload section. If you have questions about which documents need to be uploaded, please contact us at (800) 231-5360 or agentservices@twia.org.
- All TWIA payment plans are available to the policyholder. If the policyholder wants the special payment plan, the agent must select the “Weston or FedNat Receivership Payment Plan” in the payment plan section of the TWIA application.
Insurance agents can also review training resources related to TWIA’s policy system and application process.
FedNat (Maison) policyholders with pending claims or other questions can contact FedNat Claims/Customer Service by visiting their website or calling 800-293-2532. TWIA does not have information about FedNat (Maison) policies or claims.
If you are seeking information about FedNat (Maison) policy premium refunds, contact the Texas Property and Casualty Insurance Guaranty Association (TPCIGA).

TWIA is not the only option for windstorm coverage on the Texas coast but may be the only option in your area.
TWIA is the wind and hail insurer of last resort on the Texas coast. If a coastal property owner is unable to get windstorm coverage from another insurance company, they may be able to get a TWIA policy.
Other private insurance companies may also offer windstorm insurance: TDI's HelpInsure website is one resource for windstorm coverage options.
