2024 Hurricane Season in Review
Published on: December 20, 2024Now that the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season is over, we want to provide updates on our Hurricane Beryl response, along with key trends and challenges we’ve identified.
Hurricane Beryl Overview
- Third-largest claims event in TWIA’s history: More than 31,000 claims were filed.
- Claims paid: To date, policyholders have received more than $295 million.
- Impact on the Catastrophic Reserve Trust Fund (CRTF): At the start of the 2024 hurricane season, the CRTF held approximately $450 million. Payments for Hurricane Beryl claims and associated loss adjustment expenses (LAE) are expected to fully deplete this balance. The CRTF serves as TWIA’s first layer of funding.
Although Hurricane Beryl was the most significant storm to directly impact Texas in 2024, Hurricanes Debby, Francine, and Rafael also formed in the Gulf, triggering the requirement that TWIA put a policy moratorium in effect.
Trends and Challenges After Hurricane Beryl
Several issues contributed to challenges for agents and policyholders after the storm:
- Deductibles: Misunderstandings about how deductibles are calculated and how they affect claim payments.
- Coverage confusion: Differences between coverage for townhouses and condos created complications for several claims.
- Claims challenges:
- Homes with unrepaired damage from prior storms
- Damage caused by untrimmed trees.
- Misconceptions about the scope and application of the Additional Living Expense endorsement.
- Payment delays: Some policyholders experienced delays due to outdated or incorrect mortgage company information on their policies.
