According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), phone scams pose a significant threat to both personal and financial security, affecting individuals nationwide. 

What Are Phone Scams? 

Phone scams involve deceptive tactics where fraudsters often call from local numbers to appear legitimate. They pretend to impersonate reputable organizations, such as insurance agencies or TWIA representatives, to deceive unsuspecting individuals. 

Phone scammers seek to obtain sensitive information like banking details, credit card numbers, Social Security Numbers, and home addresses under false pretenses.  

Common phone scams include: 

  • High-pressure tactics  
  • Demanding immediate action  
  • Creating a sense of fear or urgency 

How Can I Protect Myself from Phone Scams? 

  • Exercise caution: Avoid sharing personal or financial information over the phone unless you initiated the call to a known number and can verify the caller’s identity. Legitimate insurance representatives typically do not request sensitive details over the phone without prior confirmation. 
  • Stay informed: Being familiar with common tactics used by phone scammers can help you recognize and avoid potential threats. 
  • Maintain records: If you receive a suspicious phone call, write down the caller’s phone number, name (if provided), and any other relevant details. This information could be helpful if you need to report a phone scam or verify it was not.
